Industrial Safety, Health and Welfare Museum

This Museum is run by the Regional Labour Institute, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Govt. of India. Exhibits depict industrial safety devices different classes of health hazards and remedial measures accident prevention methods including occupational health. Organises safety training programmes for workers.

Institute of Port Management Museum

Collects and displays different aspects of port management with special reference to the problem of Calcutta Port Trust and the Hooghly river channel. Displays models of dredgers, lock-gate systems, berths and modern docking facilities.

Jute Museum, Jute Technological Research Laboratories, I.C.A.R.

Established in 1936. A Departmental Museum under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research; displays various facets of the jute and allied fabrics, charts showing chemical properties, structure and machining of the fibre, also decorative, industrial and household products derived from jute. Popular with research workers, technologists, foreign traders and tourists interested in information about jute and jute fabrics.

Marble Palace Art Gallery & Zoo Garden

Established in 1855. Collections include different European objects of art and oil paintings. Maintains a small zoo displaying birds and non-carnivorous animals.

Established in 1932. Run by the Corporation of Kolkata. Has got some displays on public & civil health and indigenous products.

National Library: Rare Books Section

Collections include a large stock of rare books and valuable manuscripts of the pre-British and British days; original letters and notes of eminent personalities. Section is air-conditioned and has a separate reading room. Visits arranged by prior permission.

Netaji Museum : Netaji Research Bureau

Established in 1961. Collections kept in the ancestral house of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose include personal effects, photographs, letters of Netaji and other documents. The Bureau also sells books written on Netaji. Has a good collection of photographs and documents on India’s struggle for freedom.

Nehru Children’s Museum

Established in 1972. Collections include puppets depicting the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, dolls wearing national costumes from different countries, miniature working models of railway crossings and other novelties and an elementary science gallery.

Rabindra-Bharati Museum

Established in 1961. Located in the ancestral house of Rabindranath Tagore and attached to the Rabindra-Bharati University. Depicts the Renaissance Movement of Bengal in the 19th century and the role of the members of Tagore family therein. A major section deals with the life and works of the poet. Has a rich collection of books, original paintings, manuscripts, photographs and other items related to the leading personalities of the 19th century such as Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar and Dwarkanath Tagore. Sells nicely printed sets of cards.

State Archaeological Gallery

Established in 1962. Collections include rare tools of the Early, Middle and the Late Stone Ages from Susunia (Bankura) and other sites, proto-historic antiquities from Pandu Rajar Dhibi (Burdwan), terracottas, sculptures, stone and stucco from the Gupta, Maurya, Sunga, Kushana, Pala and Mediaeval times. Also has section on ‘Historical Art’ opened in 1963; displays large number of old terracottas, bronzes, wood-carvings, textiles and manuscripts. Sells several card-sets and other publications; activities include explorations and excavations of historical sites.

State Archives, Government of West Bengal

Established in 1909. Collections include East India Company’s administrative records from 1770 to 1858, some Persian and Bengali records from 1624. Dutch records relating to Chinsurah from 1702 to 1827, some Danish records on Serampore, records of the Secretariat Departments and records of the Crown period 1858-1947 and indices. Records from 1901 onwards are kept in State Archival Repository at the Writers’ Buildings, Kolkata – 700001.
